Chapter Sixteen
Sam
âYouâre early,â Lila says when I arrive at her house. âIâve been out for a run and Iâm all sweaty. Donât look at me until I take a shower.â
âNo complaints from me about how you look,â I say, pulling her in for a quick kiss. The tight sports bra and running shorts show off her curves perfectly.
âIâm serious,â she says. âI have to take a shower first before dinner. If you want a snack, there is butter pecan ice cream in the freezer and chocolate syrup on the counter. Iâll hurry.â
âTake your time,â I say. âIâll eat a bowl of ice cream or two.â
âDonât spoil your appetite,â she calls out from the hallway.
I wait until I hear the sound of the shower running before glancing around for her phone. Itâs not on the kitchen table, so I quietly sneak into the bedroom where I spot it on the dresser. With any luck, Iâll be able to see how often sheâs checking in with the ATF.
I flip open the phone and immediately the screen prompts me for a four-digit code.
Shit!
This is hopeless, and Iâm not even going to attempt it. I put the phone back where I found it and go back to the kitchen. Grabbing a bowl out of the cabinet, I add two scoops of ice cream and a generous helping of chocolate syrup.
Iâm halfway through my second bowl of ice cream when Lila stomps into the kitchen with a pissed off look on her face. She holds up her cell phone.
âDid you try to get into my phone while I was in the shower?â she asks.
Damn!
Opening her phone was stupid and a mistake. Of course she would know if I touched it. She probably set me up just to see if I would try. One look at her face tells me that lying isnât an option.
âYeah, sorry,â I reply. âHow did you know?â
She glares at me for a moment before answering.
âThe phone has a program that alerts me if anyone tries to open it. Were you checking up on me?â She crams the phone in her back pocket. âJust so you know, I donât go for the jealous, stalker type of guy. I donât understand what you hoped to find. Were you afraid I was texting other men or something?â
Texting other men? Oh hell no!
The thought had never occurred to me until she mentioned it.
I feel like Iâve had the breath knocked out of me.
What if she has a boyfriend or even a husband in her real life? Here Iâve been thinking itâs just the two of us involved in this game. A game that Iâm enjoying way too much considering the high stakes involved.
If there is another man in her life, I need to know right now.
This puts an entirely different spin on things, and I donât like it.
Not one bit.
I canât let her see how unsettled I am by the idea.
âHell no, I wasnât checking up on you,â I say with a laugh. âThatâs the kind of shit women do.
